Are You Researching Your Keywords?
I recently saw a company looking for someone to help them with SEO. They indicated that they already had the keywords that they wanted to use. They sell sinks, so for this particular page, the keyword phrase was kitchen sink. It seems like they pulled this out of thin air, and they obviously did not do the most important step when it comes to Search Engine Optimization:
Perform and Research Your Keywords
Obviously kitchen sink is not going to be easy to rank on the first page of Google. You have companies like Kohler, Amazon.com, Lowes, Overstock.com, and Ikea appearing on the first page for the term kitchen sink. If you are a small business, you will be climbing up a steep mountain trying to rank for general terms like this.
There are tools out there to help you with this. You can find out the local and global search volume for keywords, and some tools will also use an algorithm to help you determine which keywords are easier to rank.
Kitchen sink has 135,000 searches per month on Google. While this is a high number, if you cannot rank for this, you will not even sniff any of these potential customers.
What you will need to do is look at some of the keywords with lower search volume and create long tail keywords. Long tail keywords have more than one keyword in the phrase, so with consistent SEO, you can eventually rank for several keywords. Here is an example:
- Double sink for kitchen has 390 searches per month
- Custom kitchen sinks has 320 searches per month
- Kitchen basin sinks has 260 searches per month
All three of these terms are easier to rank than just kitchen sink. We add the search volume, and we get 970. Now we create a long tail keyword for these, something that will make sense in a description or blog post.
Double custom kitchen basin sinks
As you can see all three search terms are represented here, so if you specify double custom kitchen basin sinks as your main keyword for that page, all of the variations will eventually rank with proper SEO, and you will get visibility for all 970 searches.
Websites do not rank, the individual pages rank, so you need to have good keywords for all of your pages. Keyword research is the first and most important step to achieving the rankings you want.
